My Personal Review of the Razor Pocket Rocket Miniature Electric Bike

Razor Pocket Rocket BikeI was looking for a birthday gift to get my 8 year old son and decided I would check out those little mini bikes that I have seen around lately. You have probably seen kids riding the little pocket bikes around the neighborhood and at parks. I assumed that most of the electric pocket bikes were the same and didn’t think that I really needed to look around at them much before I bought. I was just going to look online, find the first one that was within my budget and buy it.

I was very wrong in assuming this. There is a lot more to these pocket rockets then you would think. I started reading some reviews and looking around at different models to really get into the details and find out which bike was the best. After reading about all the things that set these bikes apart, my extensive research lead me to the Razor Pocket Rocket Miniature Electric Bike.

What to Look for When Buying an Electric Pocket Rocket

I figured out pretty quickly that there are a few really important things to look at when buying one a pocket rocket bike:

  • The battery
  • The speed
  • The weight it can support
  • The brake
  • Assembly

If you buy a pocket rocket bike based on the price and nothing else, then you will most likely run into issues down the road. This is especially true if the bike is going to be used on a regular basis. Read along with me here as I explain each of these in relation to the Razor Pocket Rocket Miniature Electric Bike.

It’s all about the battery…

The bike has a 24V (two 12V) sealed lead acid battery system which allows for up to 40 minutes of continuous riding. Other bikes that I looked at would last for 25-30 minutes, so this is quite an improvement. They recharge in only 12 hours, so you can charge it after its done being used for the day and have a full charge the next day. This was great for my son because he would ride it every day he could and if he would have had to wait, he wouldn’t have been happy.

With riding the bike almost every day he seldom ran out of a charge in one day of riding. He would ride it all around the neighborhood and across our street to a nearby park and never had any issues. Some of the other bikes I reviewed took 16+ hours for a full charge, so again the Razor Bike was looking good.

The need for speed!

The Razor Pocket Rocket Bike goes a maximum of 15 MPH. The high torque motor helps achieve this powerful top speed. 15 MPH doesn’t sound that fast, but when my son was riding around, it seemed pretty fast. I really wouldn’t want him to be able to go much faster, or I feel that it would be really unsafe.

The bike has a twist grip throttle that is very easy to learn to use. My son had it down in a matter of 20 or 30 minutes and was able to control his speed smoothly and easily. Some of the other bikes I looked at had much higher top speeds, but I think that would be way too fast for children 5-8 to be able to go.

How heavy is too heavy?

The Razor Bike supports maximum weight of 170 lbs. This should be plenty for most children between 5-12 years old, but may keep some of you adults from going on any joy rides. I weigh 180lbs and felt that it could support my weight just fine. Because of the size of the bike, my legs stuck way out and it wasn’t that comfortable, but I was able to take a few short rides.

Hand operated rear brake

The Razor Bike comes with a hand operated rear brake for slowing down. The right handlebar has a squeeze trigger, which slows down the bike when pressure is applied. Out of the box my son was able to break at full speed in just under 2 or 3 seconds. You can thread the brake lever adjuster in or out ¼ to ½ turn to reach the desired brake adjustment. So if it doesn’t feel right to you, it’s really easy to adjust.

Assembly required?

The Razor Pocket Rocket comes practically assembled. Within 5 minutes it was ready to go. All we had to do was charge the battery the night before and the next day my son was off riding around and having a blast. He thinks it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Some of the other pocket bikes I looked at required assembly and the reviews on those bikes had a lot of people complaining about difficult to understand directions and hours of assembling parts. I hate putting things together so I really wanted to avoid this.

How much should you expect to pay?

The Razor Pocket Rocket Miniature Electric Bike is available on the Razor website, through authorized retailers at about $269.99 but you really shouldn’t pay more than $200 for this bike. The cheapest price we have seen for it was on Amazon, where it consistently sells for $189.30.

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes, the Razor Pocket Rocket Bike includes a 90 day warranty. This may seem short, but it’s the standard among these miniature bikes and after reading through a ton of reviews, very few people had any problems with their bike.

Are there complaints?

I came across very few complaints for this bike. I looked at several consumer sites to make sure there were not going to be any unforeseen issues once I bought the bike. The only complaint I came across was one parent that was concerned about not being able to see the bike after sundown. She was afraid that the bike may get hit by a car. This was easily rectified by getting a rear and front red strobe light and mounting it to the bike.
