My Review of the InSinkErator Evolution Compact ¾ HP Garbage Disposal

InSinkErator Garbage DiposalLast January my wife and I decided to get our kitchen remodeled. Our house was built in the 1960’s so the cabinets and counter tops were sorely in need of some updating.  We had our floors, cabinets and counter tops completely removed and replaced with newer up to date replacements. While we were at it we replaced our sink and added a garbage disposal. We were tired of our drains getting clogged with bits of food and finally decided it was time to add a garbage disposer.

Before purchasing a food waste disposer, I decided to do some research and read through some garbage disposal reviews. I had a hard time finding any good information, so I started comparing different models from different companies to see what the differences were. I am glad I spent the time because there were a lot of really important things to consider when buying a disposal that had never crossed my mind. I wanted the best garbage disposal I could get and my research lead me to the InSinkErator Evolution Compact ¾ HP Household Food Waste Disposer.

What to Look for When Buying a Garbage Disposal

While I was looking at different units, I found that there were some really important things to pay attention to when buying a garbage disposer:

  • The horse power
  • Noise level
  • Installation
  • The Warranty
  • The size

If you go out and buy a disposal based off of the price and nothing else, you will be kicking yourself later. You could run into several issues, especially if you plan to use the unit a lot. Read long with me and I’ll explain each of these different items in relation to the InSinkErator Evolution Compact Garbage Disposal.

How much horsepower is enough…

This garbage disposal comes with a ¾ HP motor. Most garbage disposals come with a ½ horse power, ¾ horse power or 1 horse power motor. If you are planning on grinding soft foods and not too much at once, then a ½ HP motor is okay, but if you think there is a chance you will ever grind bones or anything hard, you want a ¾ HP motor or better. Keep in mind the more HP the motor has, the louder it will be.

The higher the HP, the faster the unit will grind which reduces the risk of jamming. Having a ½ HP motor may end up causing a jam from time to time. This is rarely a problem with the InSinkErator Evolution because it has two grind stages that will quickly grind up hard foods. In the year and a half that we’ve had ours, we have never had a jam. We pour all kinds of stuff down there, including chicken bones, steak bones and other hard foods.

Whats that noise?

This garbage disposal unit is the most quiet out of them all. If you read through any of the 82 reviews on Amazon, you won’t find a single one that doesn’t mention how much quieter it is then their previous unit or that it surprised them how quiet it was. The manufacturer claims that the unit is 30% quieter than standard disposers. I have to chime in here and say that they are exactly right. I can be whispering over the sink to someone and they would be able to hear me with the disposal running. Now that’s quiet.

Product installation

I was able to install the InSinkErator unit in under 20 minutes. The instructions were clear and made sense. What’s even better is that the company provides a fool-proof installation video on how to install the disposal. If you go to YouTube and search for “Insinkerator Installation” you should be able to find it. Only the most basic plumbing experience is required to install this unit. If you have used a wrench to tighten or loose nuts before, or replaced something in your toilet, you should be good to go.

How long is the warranty?

A lot of the products I looked at offered 90 day or 1 year warranties. To me this shows a total lack of faith in the unit by the companies. InSinkErator garbage disposals come with a 4 year, in home warranty on parts and labor. This tells me that the company believes in their unit and gives me peace at mind to know that if something did happen to go wrong, I’d have in home support to get it fixed. This is a very important thing to have and as far as I am concerned, puts them well ahead of the competition.

How big is the disposal?

Many garbage disposals can be large and clunky. This makes it especially hard if the area under your sink is small, which a lot of sinks are. The area under our sink is only about 2 or 3 feet deep and 2 or 3 feet tall. We were able to install our unit and still have room to place several bottles and a small recycle bin, all on the same side.

This unit is the smallest out of the high end disposals. Once installed, it leaves you with more room to store things and more room to maneuver when you need to do under the sink plumbing.  It truly is compact.

How much should you expect to pay?

The InSinkErator Evolution Compact Food Waste Disposer is available from many different online merchants, for around $200m you shouldn’t pay more than $180 for the unit. The cheapest price we have been able to find is on Amazon, where it’s currently for sale at $175.22. It also comes with free shipping, so you can save quite a bit by going through Amazon.

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes, the InSinkErator garbage disposal comes with a 4 year in home, parts and labor warranty, making it one of the more reliable and safe models to buy. I’ve personally never had any problems with it in over 1.5 years since we installed it.
